How I Work
Imperative to the question of how I work, is how I see the role of executive coaching. Anthony Grant stipulates that coaching involves three areas:
Skills coaching focuses on developing a specific skill set. It will focus on specific
behaviors, and the coaching sessions may be highly detailed. Some examples: improving communications skills or increasing efficacy around presentations or negotiations.
Performance coaching: here, the idea is to improve performance over a specific time frame with a strategic eye. There are very specific goals, with assessments of obstacles to attainability, and step by step pathways. The sessions help the client learn how to see the situation, create goals, figure out and overcome obstacles, and concrete ways to monitor performance.
Developmental coaching: while also strategic, this type of coaching is focused on issues of both personal and professional development. It may discuss values systems, both at work and at home, as well as ways to enhance emotional and relational competencies. Some people like to think of this as a type of support that is intimate but not as much as therapy, as it supports a confidential, safe space to explore issues and build strategy.
Executive coaching is mostly developmental coaching, with some moments of skills and performance coaching mixed in when needed.
WHAT WILL THE FIRST MEETING LOOK LIKE?
The first meeting will entail a get-to-know-you interview that allows each of us to understand the goals of the relationship. From here, a plan will emerge as to which of the above stated coaching styles will be used first. Depending on the goals, a more thorough evaluation, such as written assessments or a 360 evaluation, may begin. These are only sometimes needed, and will be discussed during the session to decide next steps.
WHERE WILL WE MEET?
Sessions may be at my office, over video conference, or by phone. Email communication is often necessary between sessions.
